Greenwich

Where I am, the clock strikes 10pm

I put on a fancy outfit and an act,

Then calmly walk out on to the damp streets to hail a cab

Where you are it has just turned 6am,

The alarm clock drags you by the hair to the days agendas, promises and obligations

To fulfill everyone else’s, but your own expectations.

Where I am the night is at its peak

In the rhythm of frenzy I am purposely accidental in my conduct, or lack of

‘She’s got no morals’, I’ve heard them say

It doesn’t affect me, well maybe a little bit.

Where you are you stay loyal, pressed up against the glass doors with your bag on the filthy floor,

You attempt to please me a little more.

The text is confusing yet reassuring,

I love you, but through all this confusion I can’t see

What Karma has in store for you and me,

And what you and I could possibly be.

Where I am, you are not,

He touches my hair and takes off my top

This hour I’m vacant for a stranger

In the parking lots you and I used to frequent.

He kissed the perspiration of my supple youthful bosoms.

He whispered many things with his lips against my ear,

And then unwrapped the rest of me just as you would, savoring an expensive present,

Greedily, gently, with hands shaking in violent yearning.

Where I am, you are 5878 nautical miles apart,

Oblivious to the things that I’ve done in the recent past.

As I reach home at a quarter past four, it is lunch time at your work

But where I am the sun has not risen,

I lie in bed and try to find reasons for actions and actions to compensate these reasons.

The cards I draw are blank,

I did not get a bad hand,

This has all been programmed.

Where I am, I’m too tired to even move,

I retire in dishabille on the hostile hotel bed,

Watching inanimate shadows cast themselves on my body.

While thinking of your face,

I smell the foreign scent of the stranger lingering on me,

The guilt travels to every inch of my stained skin and a moment later,

I’m in a deep slumber.

Where I am, you are not,

You’ll always mistake me for someone who is worthy of your bleeding heart.
